happy valentine's day!

Happy Valentine's Day!!!

Its been a pretty good day, beautiful and warm weather for a change! (good thing cause my coat is still looking sad...)

I taught the little kids today and explained that Valentine's Day in America is of course for couples but just as importantly for friends and family. We made the little Valentines cards that my mom sent, made some others with the little poem on them:

Roses are red

Violets are blue

Sugar is sweet

And so are you!**

and then tried some of the heart candy that mom had sent as well. The kids had a good time and loved making cards for their boyfriends and girlfriends (at 5 years old people! it starts young!). It was fun sharing something different about the same holiday and the kids were so cute. I had one little kindergartener tell me that after mommies and daddies get married they have babies, buuuut sometimes they can have babies before they get married! The shock!

Oh and good news! I got my first grade of the year, on the big presentation I gave in November! I'm pretty happy with my 15/20, its a good grade, I'd say about a B or B+ on the American scale and its good as the class average was 16.

**I couldn't help thinking in my head:

But the roses are wilted

The violets are dead

The sugar is lumpy

And so is your head!

Anyone remember that one??? ;)

I totally tried to do the same thing at my crappy school today (sans candy), and it totally flopped. One kid told me that poem was "nul" and not even a real poem and that violets are purple, not blue. The others all complained about having to make cards, because Valetine's (or Valenteeeen's day, as they insisted on saying) is only for les amoureux in France. My comment of "Yes, but this isn't French class, is it?" didn't win them over.

And congrats on the grade, 15 out of 20 is awesome!

that sucked that your lesson flopped! i think over the last 3 years it's always works with me cause my mom is wonderful enough to send over the little cards and candy (most importantly the cards though).
the kids are always excited and its one of my favorite lessons to teach.
sometimes with certain classes nothing works though... isnt' it frusterating? plan a great lesson and they just sit there like lumps? grrrr...

yes thank you! i'm very proud of my grade ;)

It's fun to hear that the little kids liked the cards and candies! It's always a challenge to guess what theme the kids in France will want...Winnie the Pooh? Shark Tales?
Sponge Bob Square Pants? Spiderman?
I'm glad that having the actual cards made the class a little more special!
Happy Valentine's Day!!
Love, Mom
